Copiers Are Always Better Than Inkjets, Here’s Why

If you ever decide to buy a printer, either for home or work, one of the choices that you will be faced with is whether to get an inkjet printer or a copier. Inkjet uses liquid ink sprayed through microscopic nozzles onto the paper, and copiers use a toner cartridge that is filled with fine powder and a heated fuser. Each technology has its own set of strengths and weaknesses. The two types use different approaches, and each is appropriate for a certain printing need.

Surprisingly, you can purchase a copier or an inkjet for almost the same price. If you are looking for a budget multifunction printer, which will include the ability to photocopy and scan images as well as print, there is not much difference in price between inkjets like the Canon PIXMA MX350 and copiers like the Dell 1133. The one noticeable difference between the models is that only the inkjet model can print coloring pages, copiers are only capable of producing black and white documents unless you upgrade them to the newest model that can print coloring pages too.

Copiers are a bit more expensive than inkjets; it is because copiers are made for office use, and they can copy in bulk. Inkjets, on the other hand, are made from home users and small businesses. Budget inkjet printers come with starter cartridges, which do not have a full ink tank. This means that you need to refill the cartridges after a few prints.

As you continue to use your copier over a period of time, you will need to keep it supplied with the correct consumables like ink, toner, or paper. The ongoing running cost of printers is usually quoted in cents per A4 page. You can calculate this by dividing the number of pages that a toner cartridge or ink can produce. This figure is given by the manufacturer, by the price of the cartridge. This does not include the cost of paper, though, but this won’t change depending on the type of printers.

Generally, inkjets have a price per page that is higher than copiers. Even though this includes both black and color cartridges, if you intend to print only black, the ongoing print cost is still high. Black and white copiers have a price that is lower than inkjets per page on average. If you spend more on a copier, the cost per page will drop quickly. Copiers may be more expensive when you purchase or lease it, but the ongoing cost is cheaper than inkjets.

If you are going to get larger copiers, though, they have additional ongoing costs compared to inkjets because they require an additional fuser cartridge or the replacement of parts with a maintenance kit.

When it comes to printing black and white pages, copier printing is the best. Even in low-end cheaper copier models, you can expect that the print speed is 20 pages per minute. Inkjets are slower, with budget inkjets rarely printing more than six pages per minute, and that is with a black and white text.

For normal print sizes, text printing quality is similar between both inkjet and copier printing platforms. However, if your printing needs include printing small fonts, then copiers are normally superior to inkjets, as the technology is getting better and better, so the less that you will see of dots and curves in texts.

Basically, copiers are better than inkjets, especially if you are going to use it for work.
